1960s - 1962ish

Christine in the carriage, Patty in the kerchief, and Jimmy with the snowball. I think Christine is strapped in to the carriage so she won't fall out.  I wonder what is going on - Patty is laughing at something!

I came to hate that carriage - I think it was the same one that I was in when I was small! By the time Jimmy and Christine were in it, it had already been through me, Johnny, and Patty - I thought it looked old and decrepit - I was embarrassed to be pushing Jimmy or Christine in it - I couldn't understand why my mother wouldn't get a new carriage!
Never thought that maybe they couldn't afford a new one with all the kids and a new house.

Jimmy, Patty - I can't make out who is on the right.

My father was running for Park Commissioner in 1962. Below is an article from the Watertown Press of Thursday, February 22. I am only going to transcribe the information re Park Board candidates.

"Park Board

Robert A Grimes (Rep), 22, engraver, graduate Watertown School System: lifelong resident of Watertown, married, with two children; overseas duty with US Navy and served with Mass Nat'l Guard; treasurer, Watertown Young Rep. Club; associate member, Republican Town Committee; member, Chapter 14, Disabled American Veterans.

John J Manning (Dem), 41, welding technician, Raytheon; Boston English High School; technical courses, Franklin Tech and Lowell Institute; property owner and tax payer; committee man, Cub Scouts, St Patrick's; former TMM Pct 8; active in fraternal organizations; AOTT Watertown Veteran; US Navy 6 yrs."

The news clipping below is also from 2/22/62 - it is a continuation from Page One - an article on the League of Women Voters' Candidate Night. I don't have page 1 so I'll just transcribe this newspaper clipping.

"Candidates -
(Continued from Page One)
Caloggero (Rep), and P Alfred Pannessi (Rep); Planning Board: Frederick Ciolfi (Rep), John A Loring, Jr (Rep), John A Ryan (D), and Francis J Maloney (D); to fill one-year vacancy on Planning Board: Ralph E Kazanjian (Rep) and Kevin Lynch (D); Moderator:Leo Michael Linehan (Rep) and Thomas C Menton (D); Assessor of Taxes: J Malcolm Whitney (Rep) and Robert J Plunkett (D); Water Commissioner: Harry A Miller (Rep), and Edward M Quinn (D); Library Trustees: Mrs. Helen G Wood (Rep), Mrs Elizabeth Ann Kelley (Rep), Edmund Hickey (D), and Mrs Helen Guest Perry (D); Town Treasurer: Robert C Hagopian (Rep) and Bernard E Bradley, Jr (D); Park Commissioner: Robert A Grimes (Rep) and John J Manning (D); and Board of Health: Dr Rocco V Leroy (Rep) and Joseph DeVico (D).
Each candidate will speak on his qualifications. Selectman and School Committee candidates will be given time to elaborate on issues of importance to them and to Watertown.
Following the meeting voters may question candidates informally as refreshments are being served. Reprints of questions asked the candidates for town offices by the League will also be available.
Each year more citizens avail themselves of this source of information provided by the Voters Service Committee of the League of Women Voters, according to Mrs Arthur O'Dea and Mrs Ernst Bogusch, co-chairmen. Hostesses for the evening are: Mrs Edward Holland, Mrs George Winter, Mrs Frank McGowan, Mrs Bruce Lorig, Mrs Donald Quimby, Mrs Charles Norsigian, Mrs William Douglas, Mrs Foster Palmer, and Mrs Elaine Kligman.
Anyone desiring transportation to the meeting may telephone Mrs Ernest Picard, WA 6-0347."

There was an article in the March 1, 1962 town newspaper - this looks like the Watertown Press but could be the Watertown Tab. I only transcribed the bit about the Park Commissioner race.

"Park Commission GOP candidate Robert Grimes outlined his background and noted, in his days on the playgrounds here, lack of personnel for supervision. His Democratic opponent John J Manning said the town had an excellent system now playground activities
co-ordinated between the Park Dept and Recreation Commission and noted his background in recreation work in the service in Okinawa."

The following clip is from the Watertown Press March 1, 1962 article on the upcoming election.

The encircled section states:
"For Park Commission, John J Manning, president of the Hibernian Club of Watertown is the Democratic nominee for a vacant spot. His Republican opponent is Robert A Grimes, treasurer of the Watertown Young Republicans Club."

I don't seem to have any newspaper accounts of the election results, but I do have this certificate from the Town Clerk. The town seal is on the bottom left.

"Office of
Town Clerk

Watertown, Mass, March 5 1962
To all persons to whom these presents may come:
This is to certify that  John J Manning
has been duly elected to the office of Park Commissioner
for the term of Three years.
Attest:                                     George B Wellman Town Clerk
Please call at this office and qualify"

I'm not sure when this newspaper clipping is from - it mentions that my father was elected in 1962 so I think it is 1963 or 1964 because he was just certified on March 5, 1962. I'm putting it in now because I don't think there is any more information about him being Park Commissioner.

"Manning Is
Chairman of
Park Board

At a meeting of the Board of Park Commissioners held March 5 in the Administration Building the following officers were elected: chairman, John Manning; clerk, Frederick A Parsley, Jr. The third member of the board is Paul J Whittemore.
Mr Manning, elected to the Board of Park Commissioners in 1962, is a  past president of the Watertown Division 14, Ancient Order of Hibernians, and has been active in Cub Scout work."

One thing I do remember when my father was Park Commissioner was the day that I was going down to the library to apply for a job as a library page. When did you get working papers back then - 16? I was very shy. My father decided to come with me. I remember that we walked into the library and my father strolled up to the desk and said to the the librarian 'Can you tell (whoever the library director was) that John Manning - Park Commissioner - is here?' The confident way he said it - like Park Commissioner was a big deal - has stayed with me. A library page was a popular job in those days - there weren't many openings - I didn't get the job anyway - Park Commissioner or not!

Another St Patrick's Day party where we were part of the entertainment.

"St Patrick's Day Wish

I wish you many a Patrick's Day
Of gladness and delight,
May golden memories bide with you
At morning, noon and night;
May all your thoughts be bright with hope
May all your dreams come true.
And where you roam - afar, at home -
God's blessing be with you.

This could be Easter Sunday in the backyard. Jimmy and it looks like George and Kathy Navin on the left side of the swing. Joanie in the center. I can't make out who is beside Christine on the right side of the swing - Mary Patricia Navin perhaps? Christine's bonnet partially blocks her face.
Hannie bought this swing - we loved to swing on it - but on Sundays my mother and Hannie would be yelling at us in a whisper to be quiet while Mass was going on!

Every year Mrs Condon put on a musical production - I think it was a parish show. I can't remember what younger grades were included but I saw the names of my sister Patty's classmates - so I was in 6th grade and she was in 2nd grade - perhaps it was all the classes - and perhaps St Pat's School and the CCD classes.

Here is my 6th grade class picture. I had Sr Gonzaga - she was one of the nuns my father drove home on the weekends. She like many of the other Dominican nuns were rabid Red Sox fans.

Our classroom was in the basement of the High School building - the windows were high up - Sr Gonzaga loved geraniums and had some on the window sills. She would pick the dead leaves - I can still smell the odor of those geraniums!

Sr Gonzaga was tough - she had a plank of wood - if a boy was acting up -  (I don't remember her doing this to any of the girls) - she would have him come up to the front of the room, tell him to bend over the desk, and whack him on the butt with this big board. Child abuse for sure!

During the 6th grade, I developed scarlet fever and another contagious disease - of course the house was quarantined. Shortly after I went back to school, the class was taking a test - I can't remember on what - but I got an 'A.'  Monsignor Michael Houlihan later presented me with a copy of 'Profiles in Courage' by President John F Kennedy for my good mark after being out of school for a week. I still have that book that Monsignor Houlihan signed.

All "A"s - I was such a wimp plus I was afraid of Sister Gonzaga!

MEM in line to perform at the Feis

MEM 3rd from left, ? Patty Coen, Janice O'Hara, Martha McGann

MEM dancing - this might be the time when I could not get the beat of the music to know when to start. After standing there for a while, I just started dancing - cross out any medal for that dance! I was mortified.

Back of picture says "Feis June 1962" - Christine, Patty, Jimmy and Johnny

Back of this picture says "Irish Feis August 15, 1962 Brookline Town Field" - of course that is Patty waving with Nancy sitting in the chair behind her - I think Joanie, Christine and Jimmy are beyond Nancy - I am in the chair in the center with Martha McGann (?) beside me and Patty Coen on the right. I can't think of who is sitting beside Patty.

Michael Pepe, Christine, and Jimmy - June 1962
The Pepes lived across the street - Nick Pepe was a firefighter - his wife was Marie - they had 3 children Lisa, Michael who later became a firefighter like his father, and Deena who was around Christine's age - Mike was a little older than Jimmy. I used to babysit for them and they were always good! Their cousins - the Mancinis? - lived up on Church Street next to Sputnik - the dog that we were afraid of because he was always barking.

Patty's 1st Communion picture - this picture was taken Thursday, June 28 per the back of it.

Patty's 1st Communion - Diane's too - I think Diane is sitting to the right of Patty and Jimmy to her left. I think that is me standing on the left then Joanie and Mary Patricia Navien. Nancy is in the bonnet with Kathy Navien beside her - Patty is standing and Maureen then Diane are beside her.

Patty pushing the decorated doll carriage - she is wearing a bridesmaid gown that my mother wore in Eileen's wedding perhaps?
MEM with decorated bike - I'm in an l'[--old fashioned bathing suit that Mum made for the Hibernian Halloween party.

Patty, ME,  "Johnny" is crossed out - it looks too short to be Johnny and too old to be Jimmy.

First place award for my decorated bicycle - I'm squinting from the sun. Those old fashioned bathing suits that my mother made came in handy for many Halloweens and other occasions!
