Dear Diary,
Paul McCaffrey was at work again. He was on the 'France' (largest ship in the world) & at the riot at Everett Stadium last nite. Told us of his adventures. He asked me to go flying with him sometime. So naturally, I said yes. He gave me a ride home. Cleaned up bedroom & played records. Went babysitting at 7:15 for the McClennens (117 Church St.) They're real nice. Their dgtr's 6 mos. She woke up about 11:30. The Mr is a Lt in the Navy. Nite"
I did a Google search for a riot at Everett Stadium but didn't find anything. The McClennens were related to Dr Dinjian's nurse/dental hygienist - Dr Dinjian was our dentist.

Dear Diary,
Went to 11:45 Mass with Mary. Went to St Pat's first football game with Mary & Joanie joined us later. At the first half we joined Moe, Birdie, Mary Power & Lizzie. St Pat's lost to Immaculate Conception 6-20. Walked Joanie to Fellowship. Later met Dennis Staires & Dennis Vello. Dennis was saying that he was fighting with Joanie & Mary hated Paul; and he & I were the only 2 still on friendly terms. Mum & the Hullys drove by staring out the windows. Nite"

Dear Diary,
Got a B (70%) in a chemistry test and also on the algebra test. Had a coke in 5&10 with Susan Cook. Bought nylons & walked home with Mary Patricia. Went to Goldbanks. Didn't see Eddie, or Ronnie, or Donnie or Dennis, or anyone! It was terrible! Went to dancing school. Saw John Short on the way. Went to Hullys later. They got a ouija board. It told me Dennis S likes me cause I'm a good girl & lovable (Hoho!) Saw Jack & almost walked home with Dennis Sanchez. See ya later"

Dear Diary,
Nothing new. Went to Hullys after school. Asked the Ouija Board what boy likes me. It said Dennis - guess who? Vello!! Also said I wasn't going to be a nun. Walked home with Mary Pat. Stopped at drugstore & saw Jack. Did homework till 8:30. Couldn't watch tv because of Johnny (had to do his homework downstairs.) Watched 'Petticoat Junction' etc. Did up my hair. Nite"
The nuns were encouraging me to be a nun at this time - they thought I was a good candidate. I think it was Sr rose Patrice who backed me into a wall and wouldn't let me go home until I promised to think about being a nun.

Dear Diary,
Went to the chemistry lab today. Got stuck with Kevin Clifford as a partner. He just fools around, the damn dope. Paul Cameron & Sandra Mosca, and Sally Sadler & Peter Regan share our table. Had to get a tin can lid for tomorrow & I forgot about it until 9:20. Frank's was closed. Used a lid from a large can of pears (it had to be 4" in diameter, mine was only about 3"). Went to library about 7 with Mary N. Saw Mary Power. Saw the electrician at Green St. He's 25. Very nice. Visited Joanie at Rosemary's. Nite"
Kevin Clifford lived up on the corner of Marshall and Church Streets. He sometimes would take my book bag and carry it on his bike to school. We used to talk on the corner outside his house.

Dear Diary,
Talked with Rose Patrice after school. Asked Mary Power & I if we'd like to see 'Hamlet' with her. Said yes. Spent an hour at Rover's making up a French conversation for tomorrow. About 9:30 she called up & said we had to use idioms which we study in our last class. Great! Watched last half of Jericho - that show is fabulous! John Leyton - great, Franks - great, Andre - fab. Put the 3 together and the show's a gas. Bye"

Dear Diary,
Our French skit was a big hit. When we got up to do it, Mary sat in Rose P's chair & that took me by surprise. I started laughing & couldn't stop. I'd start to say my lines in a normal voice but I'd laughing & end up with a squeak. Everyone liked it. I didn't have to act nervous cause I was petrified. Rosy Pat said if she was ever going to have a play, I'd get the lead. Sr Marie de Montfort balled us out. She said 'I'm so sick of you that I feel like I could puke.' Went babysitting for Dickies. Got $3.50. Bye"

Dear Diary,
Work was great today. Paul & I fooled about most of the time. We shook hands one time and he wouldn't let go (it was some kind of judo grip). Then he demonstrated how to get out of it, but it wouldn't work for me. Had an argument (teasing) going. I said he wasn't very nice (always yelling) and he said I was always making a fool of myself (burning fudge in teflon pot). (True!) He won't be there for another 2 weeks. Working the next 2 & going to NJ the third. Went babysitting at Gebharts. Felt crummy about a half hour before they got home. Nite"
"Sunday, October 9, 1966
Dear Diary,
Went to last Mass with Mary & Patty. Went to Football game with Lizzie, Birdie, & 'Rover." Stopped at Moe's afterwards (we won 28-19). She & Marie invited me in & I met her boyfriend Rob. About 4:30 Rob's brother & 2 friends came in. The friends were about 24. They were belting me with a pillow. Moe, Ellen, Marie & I went to McManus' about 5. We walked Marie to Lexington St ... I got home about 6. On the way I saw Jack. He was on a motorcycle. He went by & beeped. Turned around & came back. Couldn't stop so he waved. Got $5.75 for a night at Gebharts. Bye"

Dear Diary,
Got a 60 in chem test. It was on valances. We had 4 weeks to learn it & I didn't start until last nite. Walked with Rosa to the Sq - she's not speaking to Susan Cook or Diane Patrick. Watched tv until I left for dancing school. Leo (Rob's brother's (Richard's) friend is Diane Hully's guitar teacher, he also teaches Buttons Miranda. Stopped at Drugstore. New kid, Lee, is working there. Watched Rat Patrol - okay. Nite"
"Tuesday, October 11, 1966
Dear Diary,
Nothing new at school except that I'm still stuck with Kevin Clifford. Susan Cook, Marie Vander Hagen and I had a coke in the 5 & 10. I haven't seen Billy Whyte there for ages, but I saw Dave Lenhardt Sunday (he quit working at the 5 & 10 in June. I think I already told you that.) Took care of kids. Watched tv. Haven't heard from Moe. Finished my story. Nite"
I still have the notebooks with the stories I wrote - I cringe reading some of these diary entries - I can't imagine what reading those stories will be like!!
Wednesday, October 12, 1966 (Columbus Day)
Dear Diary,
No school today so I slept till 10:30. Went bowling with Marie, Liz, Moe, & Mary at 2:30. Didn't get there until after 3. Bowled 2 strings - got a 58 and a 42! - terrible! - after getting something to eat, we finally left about 5. Moe & I had a few ciggies. Stopped at Drugstore & saw Jack. Went to 'W' House & got pizza. Got home about 7. Went to Navins about 8:30 for my U.N.C.L.E. book. Went to Barca's. Nite"
Barca's Spa was a shop on Mount Auburn Street.
"Thursday, October 13, 1966
Dear Diary,
Not much going on at school. Had a fire drill during chemistry. On the way in I stepped in (ahem) (shall we say) dog shit. I didn't even notice it until I was in school & began to smell it. Spent half of study trying to get it off my shoe. Went to Rene's room to get Mary's books - she went home sick. Stopped off at her house about 4:30, after going to Mrs Linehan's. By the way, saw Dennis Vello when I was coming home from school. Also Mrs McClellan & Margy. Mum went to Driver's Ed & I babysat. Jericho was great! J Leyton is outta this world! Bye-y"
Mrs Linehan was Maureen Stinehart's grandmother and a leader in Watertown's Democratic circles.

Dear Diary,
Talked with Rose Patrice & Renee. Rene said she didn't tell Rory Pat re the nickname and Rose Patrice said that the walls have big ears. Met Susan Cook, Rosa Garcia, and Diane & Kathy Patrick in the Square. Had a coke in Butler's. Mary came down & we played the records. (Did I tell you she fell thru a cold air register while washing windows? Happened in her living room. Jumped up to wash window & fell through - down to the basement. Happened Wed. Bye"
"Saturday, October 15, 1966
Dear Diary,
Richard was at work today so I left at 12 to go to Boston with Moe and Ellen Stinehart. We met Mary in Harvard (Sq.) Moe bought a dress & shoes for the BC dance. After that we went to the Common. We were followed by 3 sailors. If Mary & Ellen weren't with us, we would have stopped & talked to them. Two guys followed us and tried to talk to us, but since they weren't sailors, Moe & I avoided them. So they talked to Ellen - even asked her out but she said no. Got home about 6:15. Babysat for Dickies. Got $3.50. Nite"
"Sunday, October 16, 1966
Dear Diary,
Got up at 11:50. Only Patty had gone to 11:45 Mass & she hadn't awoken me. Mum had gone to 9:15 but had gone back to bed. Went to Parker Drug & Sunnybrook with Mary. Went to her house. Later Lois came down. We went back to Sunnybrook. On the way home we saw Dennis. Talked with him while Mary & Lois were leaving me. Finally caught up with them & got rid of Dennis. Don't like him very much any more. Went to Navin's after Mass. Watched the FBI - great. Jim starred. Nite"
"Monday, October 17, 1996
Dear Diary,
Stayed up till 3:40 am reading 'To Kill A Mockingbird.' The test was all right. Rose Patrice caught me chewing gum again - had to write 'I shall not chew gum in school' 60 times. After clapping the erasers I went to the lav. As was putting my comb in my pocket (I was standing in front of the door), Linda Maffioli came charging in & I got a good hit on the head. Had a coke with Susan Cook. Went to dancing school. Didn't get home until 8:15. Felony Squad was great - Dennis Coleman starred. Bye"
"Tuesday, October 18, 1966
Dear Diary,
Had the PSAT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test). It wasn't too bad but it wasn't too good. A Father Damien came during study - what a boring period - he talked during the whole thing except for 5 mins. Had a coke in 5 & 10 with Susan Cook after after I washed the blackboards, locked the windows, & locked the back door. Lizzie was working & pointed out a big fat, ugly woman, called Bulldog about whom she & Marie are continually talking. Nite"
"Wednesday, October 19, 1966
Dear Diary,
It was pouring cats and dogs all day. After washing & setting my hair last nite for class pix, they were taken. Went to the chemistry lab - okay. Was 15 mins late for the World Affairs Club because I had to wash the blackboards, etc after school (usually done during study - had Chem Lab today.) Stayed & talked with Sr Emerita - she's funny after school. Bought nylons. Did homework & watched tv. Nite"
"Thursday, October 20, 1966
Dear Diary,
Only exciting happening is that it was pouring this morning, and I only wore my windbreaker & no hat cuz 'cause I got a ride to school. Had to go to Church for ring ceremony & Rory was a bit put out that I didn't have a hat. Had to borrow a rain bonnet from Martha Melican. On November 15 Marie & I are going to the Sheraton Plaza for World Affairs. It's a school day & we go in the morning. Mary & Liz go the 14th. Jericho was great as was John Leyton. Nite"
"Friday, October 21, 1966
Dear Diary,
Jackie ... was expelled today. She wouldn't answer an English question after Rosey warned the class that anyone who didn't answer would go to the office. Jacky didn't answer so Rosy ordered her to go to the office. When May Bob wasn't there, Jacky came back, but Rosy kicked her outa the room. Finally May Bob arrived & forced Rose Patrice to sign Jacky's transfer papers. According to Jacky Rosey said 'I didn't know it would go this far. I'm sorry, Jacky.' Jackie didn't seem too upset ... Nite"

Dear Diary,
Guess who was at work? Not Paul, but Richard! Damn it!! He was asking me all sorts of questions about meself. I despise him! So does Linda. I hope he's not there next week. Paul's supposed to go to New Jersey but Richard said that Paul might be there. I hope Sandy's there if Paul's not. Went babysitting for the McClennans at 7. Did some of my homework & watched tv. Got $3. Got home about 12:45. Bye"
"Sunday, October 23, 1966
Dear Diary,
Was late for Mass (11:45) because I went to Navin's for Mary who wasn't ready. Grandpa & his girlfriend Peg came over. She's real nice. Hope he marries her. Went to Harvard Sq with Moe instead of the game. There were college kids playing soccer in the street; others were dressed up as girls. Cops & Paddy Wagon came & boys split. Went to Sunnybrook Farm about 6:30. Saw Eddie & John Wolfe. Dennis & Paul came in. Talked with them a while & Patty left me. Saw Frank Pannessi."
"Monday, October 24, 1996
Dear Diary,
Not much doing. Had a coke after school with Susan Cook. Did some homework and went to Market. Patty & I went to dancing school at 6:15. Practiced dances for the recital. Might go to Canada this year. Left about 7:30. Patty & I had a coke in Fantasia's Drug. Lee was working - nice kid. Watched Rat Patrol - okay - at the Murphy's (Pat was babysitting at 8.) 'Felony Squad' was good. Nite"
"Tuesday, October 25, 1966
Dear Diary,
Did I tell you that Kevin Clifford departed from St Pat's? Great! eh? Had a coke with Marie, Mary & Susan Cook in 5 & 10. Saw Bulldog again. Mary sat beside her. Went to market. Did homework. Watched 'Girl from UNCLE' - so-so. Not as good as UNCLE which isn't so great this year. Best tv shows are 'FBI,' 'Rat Patrol,' 'Felony Squad,' 'The Monroes,' 'The Monkees,' 'I Spy,' 'Jericho,' 'Man From UNCLE,' & maybe 'Gunsmoke.' There are a few others that I can't think of now. Bye"
"Wednesday, October 26, 1966
Dear Diary,
Not much new at school. Got out at 3 today, but Mary, Marie & Lizzie & I stayed till 3:30 talking with Rosey. Met John, Diane, & Joanie. Mary thinks John is adorable. Took Joanne to Victory Field with Mary & Peggy. Went to Star Market and Parker Drug with Patty. Saw the new kid that's working in the latter. Took care of kids while Mum, Hannie, & Peg went to rummage sale for costumes for the Halloween Party. 'Monroes' & 'I Spy' were great. Nite"
"Thursday, October 27, 1966
Dear Diary,
Nothing new I'm afraid. Walked Marie Vander Hagen to work. Had a coke with Susan Cook. Iron(ed) from 4 to 5:30. Did homework. At 7:15 Patty & I dashed down to 5 & 10 to exchange a Halloween costume for Jimmy. Only missed 5 or 10 minutes of Jericho - it was great as usual. John Leyton - wow - even better than David McCallum - which is ginchy. Wrote a few pages in my new book - a western. Ended the other 2 weeks ago. Nite"
"Friday, October 28, 1966
Dear Diary,
Nothing new at school, I'm afraid. Got the first copy of the Shamrock for this year. Put out by the Juniors. My name was in it for treasurer of 11A, and Mary Navin's was in for Secretary of 9A or 9B (not sure which.) Went for a coke with Susan Cook. 5 & 10 was crowded so we went to Butler's and guess who we ran into? Debbie Darnell & Jill Coffey! They snubbed Susan but said hello to me. Bye"
During this time the opposition to the Vietnam War was increasing. The article on the top right is aimed at what students can do.
"Peace Through Prayer
President Johnson has been pleading with other nations to negotiate for peace. Pope Paul VI has been pleading with us to pray for peace. This sought for peace can be found when these two factors are working in close harmony and not until then. Especially in this month of October the Pope would like us very much to pray the Rosary to Our Lady with the very special intention of world peace. The Pope has urged all to do this in his recent encyclical to all the peoples of the world, 'Rosaries to the Mother of Christ.'
'We can see nothing more appropriate or efficacious than for the whole Christian family to raise its voice amid its many stresses and difficulties to pray to the Mother of God, whom we also address as Queen of Peace, to be generous, as a good mother, with her gifts.'
It is not only the end of the war in Viet Nam that we pray for but the end to all violence all over the world. For these hostilities have not only been continuing but also have been increasing rapidly. We have to realize that God is all good and understanding and that He will listen to us either directly or through His Blessed Mother. One can just imagine many things that could happen if the world situation goes on as it is. Are we going to sit back and let it happen? Are we going to throw all the responsibilities onto our nation's leaders' shoulders? Of course, we cannot make the negotiations but we can relieve half of the burden.
Yes we can pray. Prayer is the answer. Are you willing?"
I'm a lot more cynical now than back in 1966 when we were praying the rosary for world peace as well as for the conversion of Russia back to Catholicism. People have been praying for world peace for centuries - obviously if there is a God, he has not been listening.

Dear Diary,
That damned Richard was at work again today. We had a little spat over who was going to go out for lunch. We were arguing because he was determined that I'd go, I said I wouldn't. He said he was too important to go & I actually laughed in his face! Really! He put money on my desk & told me what he wanted. Lynda was going to go, when I saw Ronnie, I grabbed the money & dashed. Paul's going to be there next week. Babysat for McClennans & her brother Ricky 11. Got $2.50. Nite"
"Sunday, October 30, 1966
Dear Diary,
As usual went to 11:45 with Mary who was late (as usual.) It was freezing out - 31 degrees. Went to Bulldog's football game, to the Hully's, Fantasia's Drug, Butler's, Hully's & back home with Mary. Cleaned up the house. Went to Frank's about 6:30. Saw Frank Pannessi & he said he'd drop in at the party (of course he didn't). I told him where I lived so I half expected him. The kids arrived between 7:30 - 8:00. Mary Navin came too. Nite"
"Monday, October 31, 1966
Dear Diary,
Weird party. We sat in the dark most of the time. Marie came as a geisha girl, Liz as a sailor, Birdie as a sailor, & Mary as a little girl. Pat came later as the little old wine maker. Had a seance & used the ouija board most of the time. Broke up about 11:15. Had to go to school unfortunately. Mary & Liz went home this morning. I took Jimmy, Chris & Jody out trick or treating. Later I took Jimmy, Chris, Stevie & Mike (Dickie) to Clifford's, Buddington's & Nelsons. Nite"
