Patrick Hogan and Ellen Pierce - William and Charlie Hogan

We found William Hogan in the 1901 Irish Census when he was 16 - so he must have been born about 1885. May Kiely said that he was called "The Stoker," and I have a note that he married Nora Lane. But I have no other information about this gentleman.

We have discussed David, Elizabeth, Michael, Mary, and William Hogan - children of Patrick Hogan and our Ellen Pierce Cooney.

Their son Charles Patrick Hogan was born 10 April and baptized 15 April 1883 in Kinsale. I sent for his baptismal record when we were having our family reunion. As we know his parents are Patrick Hogan and our Ellen Pierce. His Sponsors/Godparents are Pat Keohane and Mary Hogan. This Keohane is another link to our Pierces and Keohanes.

We saw Charlie's family in the 1901 Irish Census - his parents and his brother William were living in house 14 in the townland of Horse Hill Mor in Dunderow parish. Patrick Hogan is 60 and still working as an agricultural laborer. William must be finished with school because the 16 year old is also an agricultural laborer.

Charlie must have been 18 years old. So where is he? Has he emigrated to his family in America? Is he working somewhere to help support his family?

I did find a listing for an 18 year old Charles Hogan in house 5 in the townland of Derrynagasha in Leighmoney parish. He is a farm worker for the Finn family.

Jeremiah Finn is the head of the family - he is a 60 year old farmer. His wife Mary is 50 years old. Unlike her husband, she reads and writes. They both speak Irish and English.

16 year old Lizzie Finn is a farmer's daughter - does this mean she no longer goes to school? David is 13 and is listed as a scholar so he is still attending school.

According to the House and Building Return, Jeremiah Finn owns his home which is a 3 room 2nd class house. So is Charlie Hogan working for Jeremiah until David is old enough to do a man's share of the work on the farm?

I found a 1904 passenger listing for Charlie Hogan on the S. S. Cymric. The ship left Queenstown on September 30 and arrived in Boston on April 8.  The numbering is a little odd - but Charlie is on line 8 - I'm not sure what the other numbers indicate.
Charlie is a 21 year old single laborer. He reads and writes. His last residence was Kinsale - he is heading to Boston. His sister paid his fare, he has $5, and he has never been in Boston before.

Imagine my surprise when I saw that Charlie was accompanied by ..... his mother! She is listed on the line above him. Ellen Hogan is a 60 year old widowed housekeeper. She does not read or write. Her last residence was Kinsale. Her daughter paid her passage to Boston. She also has $5.  She is joining her daughter Mrs. M. Lucey of 22 "Neyate" Street in Somerville. (Must be 22 Wyatt Street.)

There is a line crossed through Ellen and Charlie's information - so for some reason they were not on the Cymric when it left for Boston.

But the next day on October 1st the S. S. Cedric leaves Queenstown and arrives in New York.

On board are Charlie Hogan and his mother Ellen. Line 13 lists Ellen Hogan as a 60 year old widow - she cannot read or write. Her last residence was Kinsale. Her final destination is Somerville. Her daughter bought her ticket; Ellen has $5. She is joining her daughter Mary Lucey at 22 Wyatt Street Somerville.  Her mental and physical health is good, but there is a notation that says "senility" across the columns beside her name.

Line 14 lists Charles Hogan as a 21 year old single laborer - he is able to read and write.  Like his mother, his last residence was Kinsale. He is headed to his sister in Somerville - she bought his ticket - he has $5. He has never been to the United States before. He is in good health.

Isn't it interesting that Ellen Pierce is coming to America?! But what does "senility" mean on the manifest? That she is old? That she is senile?

And why were they listed on one ship but sailed on another ship a day later?

According to the White Star Line website, the S. S. Cedric was the largest ship in the world when she was launched from Harland and Wolff in Belfast in 1902. So the ship was pretty new when Charlie and his mother sailed to New York.

On page 14 of the Marriages Registered in the City of Cambridge in the year 1910 line 14 gives us more information.

Charles Patrick Hogan marries Mary Frances Riley on April 10 at St Peter's Church in Cambridge. Charles is 25; Mary is 26. It is the first marriage for both.

Charlie lives at 73 Cambridge Street in Cambridge; Mary lives at 37 Langdon Street in Cambridge. He is a laborer while she is a domestic. They were both born in Ireland. As we know Charlie's parents are Patrick Hogan and Ellen Pierce. Mary's parents are Timothy Riley and Hannah Brennan. Father Edward F. Ryan is the priest who marries them. He lives at 31 Buckingham Street in Cambridge which is the rectory for St. Peter's Church.

St. Peter's Church, 100 Concord Avenue in Cambridge

The red icon on the left shows St. Peter's Church. The small gray icon mid page on the right shows 37 Langdon Street where Mary Frances Riley resided.

The white house is #37 Langdon Street half hidden by the tree. Looking at the size of the other houses, I should think that Mary must have worked in this house.

Charlie was staying at 73 Cambridge Street - we saw that his brother David Hogan was living at this same address when David's son Jeremiah was born in 1907. I couldn't find David in the 1910 census so I don't know if he was still there when Charlie got married. As we saw, the house is no longer there.

The 1910 U.S. Census of Cambridge was taken 20 days later on April 30 by Philip McLaughlin.  The young couple is living at 198 Otis Street. Here Charlie is listed as 26 years old - Mary is 28 years old - look how they have aged in 20 days!! We know by now that the age in a census depends on who is providing the information and if the person even knows his real birthdate!

The census tells us that this is the first marriage for each of them - they have been married less than a year. Mary has never been pregnant. Both Charlie and Mary like their parents were born in Ireland - they all speak English. Charlie emigrated in 1904 while Mary arrived in 1901 - Charlie has filed papers for citizenship. He works for the pump works. He was not out of work on April 10, 1910, and he was not out of work during 1909. Charlie and Mary both read and write. They rent the apartment where they are living.

The red icon is 198 Otis Street - it is in the same neighborhood that Charlies' brother David and sister Minnie have lived in.

198 Otis Street is the house on the left - #198 and #200 - the next house is #202 and #204.

January 29, 1911 brings a baby to Charlie and Mary. William Edward Hogan is born in Cambridge. Charlie is now a mechanic - the couple is still living at 198 Otis Street.

Charles Francis Hogan is born October 23, 1912 in Cambridge.  The family is still living on Otis Street - Charlie is working as a machinist.

This 1912 Cambridge Directory shows Charlie Hogan, laborer, at 198 Otis Street - his half brother Edward "Ned" Hogan is at 729 Cambridge Street. Charlie is on Otis Street through 1914.

April 20, 1913 is a sad day for Charlie and Mary. Baby Charles Francis dies from gastrointestinal indigestion. The poor baby had convulsions for half a day. He is only 5 months 28 days. The informant is Charles Hogan. Dr. T. E. Cunningham of Cambridge signs the death certificate. The baby is buried the next day at Holy Cross cemetery. George H. Kelley is the undertaker - we have seen him bury other Hogan relatives.

A happier time was when Charlie and his family became American citizens on May 26, 1913. A trip to the National Archives in Waltham will likely get us copies of Charlie's naturalization papers.

The Cambridge 1915 Directory tells us that the Hogans have moved to 25 Marney Street while Ned Hogan is still at 729 Cambridge Street.

1916 begins the year by bringing a baby girl to our family on January 4. Line 1156 tells us that the baby is born in Cambridge. The family is living at 25 Marney Street in Cambridge. The Hogans must not have decided on a name immediately.

Another baby girl is born the next year on November 7, 1917 in Cambridge. The family is still living at 25 Marney Street.

But, sadly, this baby, Dorothy F. Hogan, dies the same day 12 hours later. Dr. Thomas E. Cunningham lists the cause of death as Congenital Heart Disease. Again Charlie is the informant. The baby is buried at Holy Cross Cemetery on November 8. The undertaker is again G. H. Kelley of Cambridge.

Charlie Hogan’s WWI draft registration below from September 12, 1918 lists him as living at 25 Marney Street in Cambridge. He is 35 and was born April 14, 1883. He is a teamster in the city yards for the City of Cambridge. His nearest relative is Mary Riley Hogan. He is of medium build and medium height. His eyes are blue and his hair is brown.

The U.S. Census for 1920 was taken on January 10 by Mary Louisa Smith. The Hogans are still renting the apartment at 25 Marney Street. Charles is 37; Mary is 36 - he immigrated in 1904; she in 1901. They were both naturalized in 1914. Charlie is a teamster for the city of Cambridge.

They have four children - William is 8, and May Anna is 5 - they both go to school.  (May gave me the information about the Hogans - we saw the note earlier.) Lillian is 3 1/2 and baby Charles is 8 months.

In 1930 our family is renting an apartment at 1207 Cambridge Street in Cambridge for $27 monthly. Charlie is a 44 year old widower. He is still a laborer for the City of Cambridge, and he was at work yesterday.

15 year old Anna (May) is keeping house - she has attended school at some time since September 1, 1939. Lillian is 14 and has attended school. Francis is 10 and has attended school - I wonder if he is Charles Francis since Charles was listed as the baby in the 1920 census.

I wonder where William is?

I just found this yearbook for Anna May Hogan known as "May" - she is second from the bottom. She lives at 1207 Cambridge Street and attended Russell Grammar School.

"We love her for her modest grace,
Her comeliness of figure and of face."

She is headed to Bryant & Stratton Commercial School.

The following is interesting. The S. S. Franconia left Cobh (Queenstown) on 24th July 1932 and arrived in the port of New York on 31 July. On board we find William Hogan on line 6. He is 44 years old and widowed. His passport is #453032. He was naturalized in the district Court of Philadelphia on June 29/31. He is residing at 2016 East Allegheny Avenue in Philadelphia.

If you scroll down to lines 14 to 16, we find our Hogans - Anna, Lillian, and Charles. Anna is 17, Lillian is 16, and Charlie is 49 years old. Charles is listed as married - maybe he remarried?

Since Anna and Lillian were born in the United States, their date and place of birth is needed. Anna was born 31 December 1914; Lilian was born 5 January 1916 - both were born in Cambridge. Charlie's passport is #509996. He was naturalized in the Circuit Court of Boston on June 1919. They all live at 1207 Cambridge St., Cambridge, Mass.

I wonder why William and Francis (Charles Francis) are not with them?

I wonder if the William Hogan on board would ever be Charlie's brother or just a coincidence?

The 1940 U. S. Census of Cambridge shows John and Anna M. Kiley renting an apartment at 2 Hubbard Avenue - they pay $30 monthly rent. Anna provided the information to the census collector. John Kiley is 29 years old, and Anna is 25. John attended 6 years of school; Anna completed high school. John Kiley was born in Ireland and is a naturalized citizen. They both lived in Cambridge on April 1, 1935.  John worked the week of March 24-31. He is a fireman for a brick manufacturer. He worked 52 weeks in 1939 and made $1638. He had no other income.

John and Anna have two daughters - 2 year old Margaret and 1 year old Mary F Kiley. They were both born in Massachusetts.

Lillian died 7 Dec 1981 in Arlington.

So we will leave the Hogans for now - there are still questions to be answered - especially, when did Ellen Pierce return to Ireland? She came to Somerville in 1904 - then we saw her listed in the 1911 Irish Census - she was living with her nephew Patrick Hogan in Horsehill More North. When did she go back? Did someone go back with her? What did she do while she was in Massachusetts?

But let's turn now to Ellen's sister Mary Pierce who is our connection with the Keohanes.

  1. I believe my husband is related to Lillian Hogan's husband, Timothy F McCusker. I am trying to establish that link. Would you contact me via my email address so we can compare notes to see if my hunch is correct? Many thanks, Minora

  4. I came upon your blog post as I was doing some family research. We're cousins! Charles Patrick Hogan was my great grandfather. His son, Francis Charles Hogan, born 1919, was my grandfather :) There is a story about his name that I'm not 100% sure about. From what I remember, his birth certificate said Francis Charles but he was baptized Charles Francis. May is my great aunt.
