1951 March

As I said at the end of the last post, the previous diary was missing a few pages for February. This next diary is also missing pages - it starts in the middle of March 3 I think. So we'll just go from there.

"every angle. She did that Friday Feb 23 for the first time, feebly at first but more convincingly now. She's getting awful big & still kicks & dances as much s ever when we hold her up. She gets up on her knees in the high chair (strapped in as she is) also in the playpen & crib. Her favorite expressions are 'Pwee' & 'Twee' and she still says 'dada', 'mama' & 'baba.'

Mar 4 - Mary Ellen was nine months old today & pulled herself up on her feet in the ply pen for the first time. We had turkey for dinner & she had  bone to chew on which she enjoyed thoroughly. Hannie & Norma took her out in the afternoon. I think it was the first time anyone ever took her and I found myself with nothing to do. What a change. I slept for an hour or so which would have been impossible with her around. She was in wild spirits when she came home - kicked and rolled all over the bed, laughed & yelled & really outdid herself with all her tricks. Went to bed early & slept like a log.

Mar 5 - Got Mary Ellen's pictures today - they really came out swell. John drove me over to Madeline's in the afternoon & Mary Ellen had a gay time with Davy. I walked home & she slept all the way in the carriage. It's been so long since I've seen her asleep in the carriage that it made me think she was small again. She stood up in the seat of the high chair today holding on to the back of it with one hand. She's getting so active now there's no holding her. Slept good tonight too. I'm trying to break her off the rocking habit & we're having quite a battle. It's all in who can hold out the longest - whether she can cry longer than I can listen to her. Needless to say she usually wins out.

Mar 7. - Mary Ellen started creeping today. John took her upstairs to watch television while I was at the Lenten Services. When I came back  he & Hannie informed me she had been creeping - trying to get the records.

Mar 11 - Mary Ellen stood up in her play pen again - every Sunday it seems.

Mar 17 - I went to see the play with Hannie, Norman & Ma. John was baby sitter. He took Mary Ellen upstairs to watch television with Jim. When we got home at 11:30 Mary Ellen was sitting up in John's lap watching the wrestling matches. She was exhausted and fell asleep as soon as I brought her down & gave her a bottle."

"March 22 - Holy Thursday - we took Mary Ellen to visit some churches, Ma came along too. We went to St Luke's first as that's where Mary Ellen made her first novena. She behaved very well but towards the end got kind of tired. Came home about 8:00 & she slept the best she ever has.

March 23 - Took Mary Ellen down the street shopping. She's getting back to her old self again - laughing & smiling at everybody. I guess the effects of her vaccination are finally over. She's creeping all over the house now and yesterday afternoon she had a wild time with Chris. He was down on the floor creeping too & she was chasing him like mad. He went under the table & Mary Ellen went right after him then sat back and looked to see if we were all taking it in. She also walks around her play pen & tries to grab everything off the table. She also has a great habit of flopping down on her behind with a bang when she has been standing for any length of time.

Back to March 10 - Mary Ellen's third tooth finally cut thru - upper left front.

March 25 - Went over to John's house - Mary Ellen crept all over the place and they couldn't get over the change in her since the last time awe were there. She drank tea, danced, laughed at herself in the mirror and showed off all her tricks. Slept all the way home. She's doing much better as far as sleeping goes. We only have to pick her up about twice a night now to get up her burps.

March 26 - Borrowed John Joseph's teeter chair for Mary Ellen so John could give me a ride in  town. We sat her in it in the car and she yelled like mad. Finally got used to it and quieted down. John drove me as far as Central Square - I bought some end tables (at last) etc in Jordan Marsh.

March 30 - Mary Ellen has another tooth - her right eye tooth came thru today. Hannie discovered it. Does she look funny - she has her left front tooth, then a big space and then her right eye tooth. She's getting awful big and has been so good nights it's almost unbelievable. I think since she started to creep she tires herself out so much she just collapses when she gets to bed. We hardly ever have to pick her up more than twice. Her shoes are black on the tops from all her creeping and the soles are white. She gets so dirty around the floor it's really funny. Tonight her two hands were black all except for her right forefinger which was clean as could be from having it in her mouth. Ma bought her an elastic ball today which she's got a big kick out of. She caught her finger in the drawers twice today - she opened it & pulls out all kinds of papers and rags etc. then leans on the drawer to stand up - the result is disastrous. She also had Hannie's mink scarves all over the floor tonight rubbing & patting them - really liked them. Must get her some to play with, Daddy. Her favorite word is 'baby' which she has been saying for two or three weeks now."

Easter was March 25 in 1951.

"Happy Easter to you, DADDY'

"This loving little Easter card is dropping 'round to say, 'The nicest daddy in the world is wished a happy day.'"
