1950s - 1956ish

It appears 1956 started off with a bang - there are so many pictures of us in the snow! I remember loving to be out in the snow - heck, I even loved shoveling until I was a teenager and it interrupted one of my favorite TV shows! Then my mother would want us to go out to shovel the driveway on Marshall Street because they rented one half of the garage to Miss Vaughan who lived on Marshall Street but across Spring Street - it was always after we got home from school and at 4 pm the TV series "Adventures in Paradise" starring Gardner McKay and Guy Stockwell came on the TV. I remember pleading that I would shovel after the show was over, but my mother would be shooing me out the door to shovel before Miss Vaughan came home from work.

The 1950 US Census of Watertown lists Beatrice Vaughan at 39 Marshall Street - she was 58 years old and was born in Massachusetts. She never married although it almost looks like it says she was married but a 3 year old a bit above Miss Vaughan is listed as single the same way. She is a secretary for a wholesale food distributor.

The street directories from 1912 up to 1953 list her as a secretary for different companies. The 1953 Boston directory lists Beatrice Vaughan as the private secretary for Paine, Webber, Jackson & Curtis! She was still residing in Watertown where she was born in 1891.

But back to the 1950s. The pictures below show an awful lot of snow on Green Street!

Chris and MEM in back, Johnny and Patty in front outside the back door.

Joanie with reindeer on her jacket, Diane, MEM, ? who is this, Patty

My father or Norman shoveling to Green Street - looks like I am there with him, and is Johnny or Patty or both on the pile of snow at the clothesline?

Too bad the pictures are so blurry.

Looks like Johnny, Patty and maybe Diane under the clothesline.

Hard to make out but maybe Joanie and Johnny on snow pile with Patty and Diane standing under the clothesline.

MEM and Johnny

Is this Joanie?

Looks like MEM and Johnny on the mound of snow - not sure who else.
Looks like Diane sitting down, Joanie - Patty holding my mother's or Hannie's hand.

Johnny, Patty and MEM seem to be watching TV.

More snow!!

We now skip to Patty's birthday -

Johnny, MEM and Patty in front of a Sacred Heart Shrine - anyone know where this might have been?

MEM, Patty, Mum, and Johnny - this looks like Howard Johnson's in Wareham/Buzzards Bay. We would always stop there on the way to Falmouth Heights - it was a long drive in those days all the way down route 28. We would get ice cream - we always knew that the Bourne Bridge was not too far away.

MEM - loves those striped shirts, Patty, Mum, and Johnny.

Dad, Johnny, Patty, and MEM - love my dark sox and shoes.

Johnny and MEM down at a cottage at the harbor.

The car is all packed up - notice a crib, crib mattress and carriage on the roof of the car. We used to go to Falmouth Heights for the first two weeks of July. We usually shared a house near the harbor with Hannie, Norman and their kids until there were too many kids - then we rented Cullen's at the top of the Heights - the Hulistons in the front half, the Mannings in the back half. The Hulistons stayed for 3 weeks - maybe Patty is waving goodbye.

Johnny, Patty's pigtails, Dad looks like he is smiling down at Patty, MEM. Not sure if this is going to Falmouth or going home. We would stop at a Howard Johnson's on the way home for a hot dog and a drink - we would be so excited! Such a treat!

I don't know if this spiritual bouquet was for Father's Day or my father's birthday on September 11.

"You will share in
A
Novena of Masses
at the Shrine of
Our Mother of Perpetual Help
Mission Church, Roxbury, Mass
For a Wonderful Father
An Appreciative Gift
from Mimi
             Jon Jon
        Patti"

This was obviously someone's birthday - it's on Green Street - my birthday was in June - Joanie and Mary Patricia were in September - either would explain the long pants and some long sleeves. I don't look too happy on the left and I don't have a hat! Johnny, Patty, Mary Patricia and Joanie in front then Jay and Chris in back. Maybe someone knows whose party it is.

Johnny, Jay, Patty, Chris, Mary Patricia, MEM and Joanie. I'm looking at the flagstones on the right - they look new.

Johnny, Jay, Chris, and MEM with Patty, Mary Patricia, and Joanie in front.

Hannie and Norman bringing Nancy home from the hospital. Diane, Patty, Joanie, and MEM.

Christmas Eve - MEM, Patty, and Johnny - another sad looking Christmas tree!

The bells hanging on the wall - I wonder whose picture it is?

Is Patty leaving a beer for Santa? All our pajamas have feet in them.

Looks like a happy Christmas morning! Patty and I each got a cradle for our dolls.

I suppose that Johnny got the scooter.

And a train set!

I was obsessive about decorating the tree - especially putting on the tinsel. Are all the flannel shirts and pants new?
